This simulation series is based on concept of Crossed electric and magnetic fields. In crossed fields, a moving charge feels an electric push and a magnetic push. The two pushes point opposite ways. When they are equal, the charge goes straight on.

What you'll learn

  1. Straight through A proton beam flies between charged plates in a magnetic field. Find the plate voltage that lets the beam go straight.
  2. A fast electron An electron with a known kinetic energy enters the plates in a magnetic field. Find the electric field that keeps the electron straight.
  3. Any charge, same speed Protons go straight through the plates at a known voltage. Alpha particles enter at the same speed. Find the plate voltage for a straight path.
  4. Switch E off With the electric field off, the proton lands a known distance from the slit. Find the electric field that keeps the proton straight.
  5. Hall strip Electrons drift through a metal strip in a magnetic field. Find the Hall voltage and the face that turns negative.
  6. Count the carriers A current flows through a strip in a magnetic field. The voltmeter reads the Hall voltage. Find the number of charge carriers in each cubic metre.
  7. A wider strip The first strip has a known Hall voltage. The next strip is the same metal and carries the same current. It is twice as wide and just as thick. Find the Hall voltage of the wider strip.
